The Bureau of Integrated Rural Development (BIRD) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) conducted a two-day training workshop focused on culturally responsive teaching practices in early childhood. Titled "The Impact of Culturally Responsive Pedagogies on Socio-emotional Development of Early Childhood Learners in Diverse Classrooms of Ghana," the workshop gathered teachers from participating schools.

Part of a broader research project assessing how culturally responsive pedagogies affect the socio-emotional development of early learners in diverse classrooms across Ghana, the workshop equipped teachers with essential skills and knowledge for adapting intervention materials in their classrooms. Facilitators noted that these teaching strategies are crucial for nurturing foundational skills essential to pupils' personal and academic growth.

Prof. Nana Sarfo-Mensah, the project's Principal Investigator, explained that the training represents one of several activities designed not only to implement innovative teaching strategies but also to evaluate their long-term educational impact.

Workshop presentations covered the project's background, research justification, baseline study findings, and preliminary results. Participating schools will receive intervention materials, including detailed teacher manuals and scripted lessons,  in the coming weeks.

"The training was truly enlightening, providing us with deeper cultural insights that will transform how we approach early childhood education," said Francisca Bello, a pre-school coordinator from Ga-East.

Isaac Appiah from Bekwai Municipality highlighted the critical need for continued professional development workshops, especially targeting younger educators, as many current educators are near retirement.

Overall, the workshop served as a knowledge-sharing platform and a launchpad for implementing research-backed, culturally sensitive strategies aimed at improving early childhood education in Ghana. The participating teachers are enthusiastic and dedicated to the implementation phase.
